In a surprise move, the government is reportedly set to appoint former railway minister and veteran politician Dinesh Trivedi as high commissioner to Bangladesh. While there has been no official confirmation, some media reports claimed that the appointment was imminent, especially as two BJP leaders — former Union minister and BJP leader Suresh Prabhu and BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya — congratulated Trivedi on social media platform X.
Trivedi, 75, served as railway minister for a while during the UPA-2 government as a member of the Trinamul Congress. He later joined the BJP. If the appointment takes place, it will mark a rare political appointment as envoy in recent times. This also comes ahead of the West Bengal polls where the BJP is locked in a fierce electoral tussle with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s ruling Trinamul Congress. The government had earlier this month announced the appointment.
