Panic spread across the Manikchak area of Malda after three minor girls reportedly went missing in the waters of the river Ganga while taking a bath on Tuesday. The incident took place at a riverside ghat where several local residents had gathered during the afternoon.
According to eyewitnesses, the girls were bathing in the river when they were suddenly swept away by the strong current. Hearing cries for help, several local Muslim youths immediately jumped into the river and began rescue operations in an attempt to save the girls. Their quick response drew praise from people present at the scene.Local residents soon informed the police and disaster management authorities. Search operations were launched along the riverbank, while boats and local divers were engaged to trace the missing girls.
However, the strong current and rising water level reportedly created difficulties during the rescue mission. The identities of the missing girls had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting. Family members and residents remained anxious as the search continued till evening.The incident has once again highlighted concerns over safety arrangements at river ghats in the Malda district. Residents demanded stricter monitoring, warning signs, and the deployment of trained rescue teams in accident-prone areas along the Ganga to prevent such tragedies in the future.
