In a monumental ecological milestone for Jammu and Kashmir, pink lotus flowers have blanketed the waters of Wular Lake for the first time since 1992. The iconic flora completely vanished over three decades ago when devastating regional floods choked Asia’s largest freshwater lake under a thick, suffocating blanket of silt, decimating its aquatic ecosystem. The loss deeply fractured local economies in Bandipora, wiping out the seasonal harvesting of Nadru (lotus stem), a prized staple of traditional Kashmiri cuisine. Following a multi-year, aggressive restoration campaign helmed by the Wular Conservation and Management Authority, intensive desilting and weed-clearing operations have successfully revived the lake’s water quality. The return of the vibrant lotus beds not only marks a crucial biodiversity triumph for local fish populations but also signals a welcome economic resurrection for thousands of dependent fishing families.
