On 10 th September 2025 Indian PM Modi and Italian PM Georgia Meloni engaged in a telephonic conference on the state of war in Ukraine and both leaders agreed that the war must stop and there must be peace in the country. It also meant improving the ties between India and Italy.
The talks were preoccupied with th” mutual wish of the leaders to arrive at an early and peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. Modi once again claimed that India was willing to cooperate in operations designed to end hostilities, and Meloni was not alone among other European leaders who sought to enlist the diplomatic services of India, particularly its ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin to convince a change towards peace.
The discussion was also founded on”the reinforcing of the India-Italy Strategic Partnership, during which both leaders conversed on bilateral cooperation in several domains, such as defence, security, space, science and technology, trade and education. They promised to build their collaboration according to the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-29.
Another notable observation was that Meloni reiterated the Italian stalem that Italy would be in full support of early and mutually profitable India- European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). These two parties were optimistic that the ongoing talks would enhance trade and investment between the EU and India.
Meloni signed an agreement with Modi, which seeks to strengthen the connectivity by the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEEC), a project that would establish a massive transport network between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The leaders highlighted the fact that the IMEEEC had a potential of integrating regionally and assisting the region in developing economically.
Other fields of interest that were discussed included counter-terrorism, investment, and the future AI Impact Summit that will be hosted in 2026 in India. The two heads of state reaffirmed their plans to continue being closely linked and continue developing the cooperation in the regional and global matters.
Their common goals and objectives of peace, prosperity, and cooperation were highlighted in the discussion between Modi and Meloni, with the focus on the end of the conflict in Ukraine and the creation of bilateral and regional economic relations.
