Four days after a late-night crash on Kanpur’s VIP Road left several people injured and sparked outrage across the city, police arrested Shivam Mishra, the son of a prominent tobacco businessman.
The accident, involving a high-end Lamborghini, has since become more than just a traffic case — it has turned into a flashpoint about accountability, influence and justice.
The crash occurred earlier this week when the luxury sports car allegedly lost control and rammed into vehicles and pedestrians along the busy stretch. Eyewitnesses described a scene of confusion and panic as bystanders rushed to help the injured. Videos from the spot quickly circulated online, fuelling anger and demands for swift action.
From the outset, there was disagreement over who was driving at the time of the collision. Mishra’s legal team maintained that a hired driver was behind the wheel and called it an accident.
However, investigators pointed to CCTV footage and statements from witnesses that, according to police, placed Shivam Mishra in the driver’s seat. The vehicle was seized, and a case was registered under sections related to rash and negligent driving, along with other charges.
The delay between the crash and the arrest drew criticism, with many questioning whether the accused’s background had slowed the process. Police officials, for their part, said the arrest followed the collection and verification of technical and eyewitness evidence.In court, attempts by the defence to shift responsibility were challenged, and the matter remains under investigation.
The court has also sought cooperation in the mechanical inspection of the car before any decision is taken regarding its release.For the families of those injured, the focus is less on legal arguments and more on recovery. What began as a reckless moment on a city road has now become a test case — not only of traffic safety, but of whether status can bend the course of the law.
