JNU  students’ election

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is a University that is this year holding a highly volatile student union election whose results have been announced today, November 6, 2025. In an excellent turnout of 67 percent, Left Unity has swept the polls, winning all four central panel posts in the wake of an excellent campaign.

Polling was conducted on November 4, and almost 9 000 students had the right to vote in two waves, between 9 am and 1 pm and between 2.30 pm and 5.30 pm.

The contest was mostly between Left Unity (consisting of All India Students Federation, Students Federation India and Democratic Students Federation India) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the candidates of the National Students Union of India (NSUI), Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students Federation (BAPSA), Progressive Students Federation (PSA) and other independents.

The Left Unity winners were the ones who won the four top posts out of twenty candidates who were fighting:

  • President: Aditi Mishra (Left Unity)
  • Deputy Vice President: Dediyot Gopika Babu (Left Unity)
  • General Secretary: Sunil Yadav (Left Unity)
  • Joint Secretary: Danish Ali (Left Unity).

The election had heated discussions concerning student welfare, inclusion, accessibility and performance and nationalism issues as the students swarmed around their respective panels.

It has been argued that the success of the Left is due to their unity as opposed to previous year when they were divided leading to a central panel seat being won by the ABVP.

About 30 per cent of central panel nominees and 25 per cent of school councillor nominations were women which points to increased representation.

Those who watched the elections report that the promises of the Left on welfare were more popular with the electorate and the voting trends allowed reaffirming the traditional dominance of the bloc in JNU politics.

ABVP that had achieved a breakthrough with one post last year failed to break the Left fort this time.

Other organizations like NSUI and BAPSA could not influence the outcome of the central panel in any significant way yet they are still very active on the campus.

The 2025 JNUSU election has predetermined a new era of activism and political discussion at JNU, as Left Unity takes its leading position again with a strong opposition and a politicized environment.
