India has expressed condemnation towards Bangladesh following the abduction and murder of a Hindu minority leader Bhabesh Chandra Roy in the Dinajpur district. Roy, 58, was reportedly taken from his home in Basudebpur by four unidentified men according to his wife, Shantana.
Shantana revealed that he received a phone call around 4:30 pm, believed to be from the perpetrators, confirming his presence at home. About 30 minutes later, four men on two motorcycles arrived at their residence in Basudebpur village, allegedly abducting Roy. Roy was taken to Narabari village where he was severely beaten up. He was sent back home unconscious, and when rushed to a local hospital in Dinajpur, he was declared dead .
The killing drew widespread condemnation, leading to India’s External Affairs Ministry rejecting statements by Bangladeshi officials whotried to draw parallels with unrelated incidents in West Bengal. Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal urged Dhaka to focus on protecting its minority communities, calling the remarks a “disingenuous attempt” to deflect from ongoing persecution in Bangladesh.
In India, the Congress party strongly condemned the “brutal killing,” describing it as part of a disturbing pattern of violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh highlighted recent temple desecrations and targeted attacks on minority homes and businesses, urging the Indian government to take diplomatic action to ensure justice and protect minority rights.
Abdus Sabur the officer-in-charge at Biral Police Station, stated that authorities are preparing to file a case and are actively working to identify and apprehend the suspects. A post-mortem examination of Roy’s body was completed on Saturday, police confirmed.
