The central government has expressed concern that banned online real-money gaming platforms may attempt to re-enter the Indian market by presenting themselves as e-sports platforms. The move comes amid stricter regulations aimed at curbing gambling-like activities in the digital gaming sector.

Under India’s current regulatory framework, online games involving real money have been prohibited due to risks such as addiction, financial loss, and potential links to illegal activities. At the same time, the government has recognised e-sports as a legitimate industry driven by skill, competition, and entertainment, and has allowed its growth under monitored conditions. However, officials now fear that some gaming operators may misuse this distinction to bypass the ban.

According to sources, authorities are closely examining how certain platforms structure their tournaments and reward systems. A major concern is whether these platforms are indirectly linking participation to monetary stakes or offering cash prizes in ways that resemble gambling. Such practices could blur the line between legitimate e-sports and banned betting-based games.

The government is particularly focused on ensuring that prize distribution models in e-sports remain transparent and are not tied to entry fees that function like wagers. Regulators are also monitoring digital platforms to identify any attempts to disguise real-money gaming as skill-based competition.

This increased scrutiny is part of a broader effort to protect users, especially young players, from the harmful effects of unregulated online gaming. Officials believe that without strict enforcement, banned apps could reappear under new formats, undermining the purpose of the regulations.

Going forward, the government is expected to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and enforce clear classification between e-sports and real-money gaming platforms. Any violation of the rules could lead to strict action, including bans and legal penalties.

The development highlights the government’s dual approach of encouraging innovation in the e-sports sector while preventing the resurgence of prohibited online money gaming activities in disguise.
