In a major relief for India’s fuel supply, the Indian gas tanker Green Asha successfully sailed through the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, April 5, 2026.

This is the eighth Indian-flagged ship to safely cross this high-risk area since the war in the Middle East began in early March.

The ship was carrying about 20,000 tonnes of cooking gas (LPG) and followed a special,pre-approved path close to the Iranian coast to avoid any trouble. To stay safe, the crew of Green Asha used a new strategy: they continuously broadcasted that they were an “Indian ship with an Indian crew.”

Because India is seen as a friendly nation by Iran, its ships are being allowed to pass through the waterways even though most other international shipping has stopped.

This coordination between the Indian government and Iranian authorities has been the key to keeping India’s gas and oil moving despite the ongoing conflict. This successful journey is very important because India gets about 60% of its cooking gas from this region. While the Green Asha has made it to safety, the Indian Navy is still closely watching 16 other Indian ships that remain in the area.

The government has assured everyone that all Indian sailors are safe and that they are doing everything possible to make sure there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or cooking gas at home.
