Senior leaders of the Congress triggered political speculation in Uttar Pradesh after a group of party leaders made an unannounced visit to the residence of BahujanSamaj Party chief Mayawati in Lucknow. However, the leaders were reportedly denied entry by security personnel as no prior appointment had been scheduled.

According to reports, several Congress leaders, mainly from the party’s Dalit outreach wing, arrived at Mayawati’s residence amid growing political discussions over possible opposition unity ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. The visit immediately fueled speculation about a potential alliance between the Congress and the BSP.

However, the meeting never took place. BSP chief Mayawati reportedly declined to meet the delegation as the visit had not been formally communicated to her office. Security personnel at the residence turned the leaders away, leading to embarrassment within Congress circles.

The Congress leadership quickly distanced itself from the incident, clarifying that the delegation had not been officially authorised by the party. Uttar Pradesh Congress in-charge AvinashPande stated that the party had taken serious note of the matter and issued show-cause notices to the leaders involved in the “unauthorised” outreach.

Political observers believe the episode highlights the Congress party’s efforts to reconnect with Dalit voters in Uttar Pradesh, a constituency traditionally associated with Mayawati’s BSP. At the same time, the failed outreach has exposed internal confusion within Congress regarding alliance strategies in the state.

So far, the BSP has not issued any formal statement indicating interest in an alliance with Congress. Mayawati has historically maintained distance from both the Congress and the BJP while positioning her party as an independent political force in Uttar Pradesh politics.
