A political confrontation erupted in Halisahar, North 24 Parganas, after former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee’s vehicle was allegedly surrounded by protesters during her visit to the area on Sunday.
Banerjee had travelled to Halisahar to meet the family of a Trinamool Congress worker who reportedly died while in police custody. What began as a visit quickly turned tense as protesters gathered around her SUV and allegedly threw mud, slippers, bricks and stones at the vehicle.
The incident created chaos in the area, with security personnel attempting to control the crowd and ensure Banerjee’s safety. Videos and reports of the confrontation soon circulated widely, adding to the political tension in the state.
Banerjee strongly condemned the incident and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being behind the protest, calling it a sign of what she described as “lumpen” politics. The BJP, however, rejected any involvement in the attack. Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari specifically denied that the party had any connection with the incident.
The confrontation comes at a politically sensitive time for West Bengal. Banerjee became a former chief minister following the dissolution of the state Assembly in May after the BJP’s electoral victory. Her political activities and public appearances continue to attract strong reactions from supporters and opponents alike.
