In a significant administrative move during the peak of the state’s electoral process, the Central Government has granted a six-month service extension to West Bengal’s Director General of Police (DGP), Siddh Nath Gupta. The 1992-batch IPS officer, who was originally slated to retire on April 30, 2026, will now continue to lead the state’s police force until the end of October.

In a major initiative to tackle the ethnic turmoil that has affected Manipur since May 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi traveled to the state on September 13, 2025, where he interacted with individuals who have been displaced in Churachandpur and Imphal. During his time there, Modi urged for an end to hostilities, calling on all involved parties to “choose the path of peace.” This trip marks his first visit to the state since the outbreak of violence, which has led to over 250 fatalities and left thousands homeless.

The Rajasthan government has recently passed a law known as the Rajasthan Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2025. The law aims to stop religious conversions that takes place through force, fraud or trick . Supporters say it will protect vulnerable people from being pressurised into changing their religion whereas critics fear it could be misused and may affect religious freedom.
