A group of TMC legislators loyal to Mamata Banerjee on Thursday secured a separate room and dedicated speaking time in the West Bengal Assembly after meeting Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, party leaders said.
In a major political development, the parliamentary wing of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) has witnessed a significant split, with six of its nine Lok Sabha Members of Parliament reportedly breaking away from the party.
Taking everyone by surprise, Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee hit the streets of Kolkata on Wednesday. She led a peaceful protest march in Dharmatala to fight for roadside hawkers who are losing their shops to new government drives.
The AIADMK is learnt to have sent feelers to the DMK seeking support to form a government in Tamil Nadu where the elections resulted in a hung Assembly. The DMK leadership, however, gave short shrift to the proposal, sources said. The DMK “was firm on sitting in the Opposition”, as it was not interested in going against the people’s mandate.
In a defiant stand following the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) significant setback in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has categorically rejected calls for her resignation. Addressing a packed press conference at her Kalighat residence on Tuesday, a resilient Banerjee declared that she would not step down, claiming a “moral victory” despite the electoral numbers favoring the BJP.
Mamata Banerjee has stunned the political world by refusing to resign after the 2026 Bengal elections. Despite the BJP winning a two-thirds majority and Banerjee losing her own seat, she has alleged massive EVM tampering and a conspiracy by the Election Commission, vowing to fight on from a national stage.
The political map of India was redrawn on May 4, 2026, as Assembly election results across five regions delivered a series of historic upsets. In West Bengal, the BJP scripted a monumental victory, securing 207 seats to unseat Mamata Banerjee, who lost her own seat in Bhabanipur. Tamil Nadu witnessed a “cinema-to-citizens” earthquake as actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single-largest party with 108 seats, defeating incumbent CM M.K. Stalin in his stronghold of Kolathur. Meanwhile, Kerala stayed true to its “pendulum” tradition as the Congress-led UDF swept to power with 102 seats, ending a decade of Left rule. In Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma secured a record third term for the NDA with a three-fourths majority, winning 102 of 126 seats.
In a political shift of seismic proportions, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to form its first-ever government in West Bengal on May 9, 2026. Strategically scheduled for Rabindra Jayanti, the swearing-in follows a decisive mandate where the BJP secured 207 seats, ending the 15-year reign of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC). The election—defined by an unprecedented 92.93% voter turnout—saw the symbolic fall of the TMC’s South Kolkata fortress, as the outgoing Chief Minister lost her Bhabanipur seat to Suvendu Adhikari by over 15,000 votes. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to attend the Kolkata ceremony, the “Saffron Era” begins with promises of Asol Poriborton and a new ideological guard in the East.
Relations between Washington and Tehran reached a new impasse on May 3, 2026, as President Donald Trump signaled deep skepticism over a fresh 14-point peace framework submitted via Pakistani mediators. Speaking from West Palm Beach, Trump argued that Iran had not yet “paid a big enough price,” even as the Strait of Hormuz remains effectively shuttered, stranding over 2,000 vessels and triggering the largest energy disruption since the 1970s. While Tehran’s proposal demands a total U.S. military withdrawal and reparations within 30 days, Washington continues to enforce a naval blockade that has sent Brent crude soaring past $120. With the OPEC+ alliance fractured by the UAE’s exit and global markets reeling from “double-digit” surges in jet fuel, the three-week fragile ceasefire now hangs by a thread.
