Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has expressed strong support for the proposed One Nation, One Election (ONOE) initiative and said the Delhi government is prepared to shorten the tenure of the current Delhi Legislative Assembly if required to align Assembly elections with the Lok Sabha polls.

Speaking during a meeting with the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the proposed constitutional amendments, Gupta said simultaneous elections would reduce the financial burden of conducting frequent polls and minimise disruptions to governance caused by repeated enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct.

The Chief Minister stated that Delhi is willing to cooperate in the national interest and become one of the first governments to support the implementation of the reform. She emphasized that synchronised elections would allow governments to focus more on development and public welfare instead of remaining in constant election mode.

The JPC, chaired by BJP MP P. P. Chaudhary, is consulting state governments, political parties, and constitutional experts before finalising its recommendations on the One Nation, One Election proposal. While the proposal has received support from the ruling alliance, several opposition parties have voiced concerns over its impact on India’s federal structure and the need to curtail or extend the terms of some state assemblies. The proposal would require constitutional amendments and broad political consensus before it can be implemented.
