Kolkata had to see another ‘rape’ case after the case of Calcutta Law College, where a woman, studying at Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta alleged that she had been raped inside the hostel at the campus premises.
The Kolkata police have formed a nine-member team for special investigation (SIT) to probe the alleged rape case on the IIM campus. The Alipur Court has dismissed the bail claim made by the accused and granted police custody till 19th July. The Kolkata police have filed charges against the accused under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including rape, and seized his clothes and other belongings, including his digital devices, for forensic examination. Four other people have also been detained and are being questioned.
However, the mother of the accused student, Mahaveer Toppannavar, also known as Parmanand Jain, said the family had no knowledge about the detention, and she insisted that her son, a final-year student studying in the prestigious college, had no connection in this case and was innocent. The accused mother claimed that she got a call from her son’s friend and got to know about the arrest.
Meanwhile, IIM Calcutta on Sunday said they are actively communicating with the students and taking urgent steps needed for the ongoing sexual assault case. Though they declined to share further information about the measures being taken, specifying the sensitivity of the matter and legal proceedings.
The victim said she had been asked to come to campus and asked not to enter her name in the register list. The accused allegedly made an excuse that he had some work in the hostel. And asked her to accompany him. She told the police that she had been offered lunch and water which was spiked and lost consciousness when she was raped. After regaining consciousness, she left the campus at 8:30pm and came back to the hostel before complaining to the police.
Furthermore, the victim’s father has claimed all the accusations are fake and no such incidents have happened that day. He said, at 9:34 pm Friday night, he received a call from the police station informing him that his daughter had fallen out of an auto and lost consciousness, and had been admitted to a nearby hospital. He also mentioned his daughter has no connection with the man who has been arrested.
The police sources are checking the CCTV footage and have collected forensic samples from the room. According to the SIT, the investigation is still at a primary stage, and both the apparel of the victim and the accused have been taken into custody.
