The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday, August 10, 2026 welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision allowing party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee to travel abroad for medical treatment.
The Supreme Court allowed Abhishek Banerjee to travel for three weeks in September for the treatment of his eye condition. However the court asked him to share details of his travel plans.
Senior TMC leader and MLA Kunal Ghosh appreciated the Supreme Court’s decision. He said, Abhishek Banerjee had suffered a serious eye injury in an accident and had undergone several surgeries. According to Ghosh, Banerjee’s eye problem needs medical attention and he should be allowed to get required treatments.
Previously, The Calcutta High Court directed Banerjee to get examined at SSKM Government Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Court had aslo said that they could even form a medical board if any further treatment Examination was required.
Banerjee’s foreign travel is linked to several policie investigation as after the TMC’s defeat in the state election, multiple FIRs has been filed against Abhishek Banerjee and has been questioned by the police in connection with ongoing investigation. The Calcutta High Court had restricted his foreign travel while the investigation were active.
His personal assistant Sumit Roy, has also been questioned by the state police. He is being questioned over irregularities related to financial matters and recruitment.
Ritabrata Banerjee, the defected Trinamool leader and leader of the opposition in the West Bengal said he could not comment on Supreme Court’s decision, however he doubts that Abhishek Banerjee might use this opportunity to leave India and not come back.
BJP leader and Minister Dilip Ghosh also expressed his point of view, saying that if the court has given him permission to abroad for the treatment then he should go but he believes Banerjee could get good doctors and treatment in India.
In conclusion, Supreme Court’s decision now allows Abhishek Banerjee to travel abroad for his treatment while the investigations against him continues.
