On Sunday, June 21, 2026, over 20 lakh medical aspirants successfully retook the high-stakes NEET-UG re-examination at 5,440 centres across India and 14 locations abroad to secure undergraduate medical admissions. The National Testing Agency (NTA) organized this monumental pen-and-paper exercise in a compressed 37-day window following the cancellation of the original May exam amid widespread question paper leak allegations. To restore institutional credibility and prevent further malpractice, authorities executed a “whole-of-government” security operation featuring multi-layered digital tracking, biometric verification, and extensive surveillance.

The re-examination was a critical test for the central government and the Ministry of Education. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan personally monitored the operations from the NTA headquarters in Okhla, watching real-time feeds from local command centres. To eliminate any chances of a technical breach, the NTA deployed Aadhaar-based biometric authentication, facial recognition, and over 51,000 signal jammers across all venues. Furthermore, a massive workforce of over seven lakh personnel, including state police, central forces, and observers, was mobilised to ensure a hitch-free environment.

Despite the intense administrative arrangements, the day was not without challenges for the candidates. Beyond the heavy psychological toll of repeating an exhaustive preparation cycle, early student feedback indicated that the retest paper was moderately tougher than the original exam, particularly within the Physics section. Minor localized commotions regarding NTA’s strict dress code and frisking guidelines were reported in states like Rajasthan and Gujarat, though local police and officials quickly resolved the disputes to maintain smooth entry.

NTA Director General Abhishek Singh confirmed that the retest concluded successfully with no major glitches or reported leaks. The agency has assured students that the evaluation phase will be fast-tracked to keep the subsequent medical counselling on schedule. Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continues its parallel investigation into the network behind the initial May leak.
