Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk will join a high-level civil society delegation in New Delhi today, May 22, 2026, to resume political dialogue with Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) officials regarding constitutional safeguards for the Union Territory of Ladakh.

The discussions mark a significant development as it is the first time Wangchuk will directly participate in the dialogue process since parleys between the Centre and Ladakh leaders officially began in 2023. The Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) are jointly representing the region. All delegation members arrived in the national capital ahead of the crucial meeting with the MHA sub-committee.

The primary purpose of the talks is to address the long-standing political and environmental concerns of the border region. The regional groups are expected to strongly push for full statehood for Ladakh, its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution for tribal autonomy, and specific employment guarantees for local youth. Additionally, the Ladakh representatives are seeking the unconditional withdrawal of criminal cases against 83 individuals who were arrested during localized protest violence in September 2025.

This round of talks follows months of intense regional tension and institutional uncertainty. Wangchuk was previously detained for nearly six months under the National Security Act (NSA) following the 2025 unrest. The Central Government subsequently revoked his detention in March 2026 to foster a cooperative environment and build trust with the local leadership. In late April 2026, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena announced the resumption of this democratic dialogue to pave the way for an enduring solution to the region’s needs. Regional leaders have expressed cautious optimism about today’s proceedings, stating that they hope for concrete outcomes rather than a repetitive discussion cycle.
