Other recent developments in India have been to dramatically enhance diplomatic and strategic relations with Afghanistan under Taliban leadership through upgrading its technical mission to Kabul into a full-fledged embassy and to participate in higher levels of bilateral relations. Such is happening in the context of poor relations between Taliban and Pakistan which gives India a strategic chance of re-engaging Afghanistan without officially acknowledging the Taliban government.

In Afghanistan, the slim chance that women might find their voice in the media is rapidly disappearing. The Taliban, now ruling since 2021, have progressively reinforced restrictions on women and now their latest order has hit at the very core of freedom of expression. Women journalists, who were once the face of Afghan television and newspapers, are being muzzled, their faces removed from newsrooms and airwaves.

India has now aligned with the Taliban, Pakistan, China, and Russia in opposing the U.S. President Donald Trump’s bid to regain control of the Bagram air base in Afghanistan. The announcement comes days ahead of the scheduled visit of Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi to New Delhi, a historic first for a senior Taliban diplomat.

Donald Trump reignited talk about Bagram Air Base, saying it ought to return to U. S. Control and hinting—without much detail—at consequences if Afghanistan refuses. Trump leaned on his usual style, tying the base’s location to the U. S.–China rivalry, then hinted at talks with Afghanistan, leaving the specifics hanging in the air. He never said what he’d do, but the hint of military action hung in the air like the faint rumble of distant drums.
