In a landmark step to safeguard the welfare of elderly citizens, the Telangana Legislative Assembly has passed a Bill that allows salary deductions for employees who fail to take care of their parents. The legislation aims to enforce accountability and ensure financial support for senior citizens facing neglect. The Bill, introduced under the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, applies to government employees, private sector workers, and even elected public representatives. It empowers authorities to deduct a portion of an employee’s salary if they are found guilty of neglecting their dependent parents.According to the provisions of the law, up to 15% of the employee’s salary or ₹10,000,whichever is lower, can be deducted and directly transferred to the parents’ bank account. The measure is designed to provide immediate financial relief and ensure the dignity of elderly individuals.
Under the new system, parents can file complaints with the District Collector, who will review the case and make a decision within a stipulated time frame after hearing both parties. The Bill also extends protection to both biological and step-parents, widening its scope of coverage. The Telangana government stated that the move comes in response to a growing number of cases involving neglect and abandonment of elderly parents. While existing laws provide for maintenance, officials noted that enforcement has often been weak, prompting the need for stricter and more direct measures.Speaking on the development, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy emphasized that caring for parents is not just a legal obligation but a moral responsibility. He added that the law seeks to reinforce traditional family values while addressing changing social realities. The legislation has sparked widespread discussion, with many welcoming it as a necessary intervention, while others have raised concerns over implementation and potential misuse. Despite differing views, the Bill marks a significant shift in how states address elder care and familial responsibility in modern society.
