PABITRA BANERJEE : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday appeared to mock the Congress after the principal Opposition party’s dismal results in the Legislative Council bypolls across four states, and threw in an emoji for good measure, chucking salt into its wounds. Pointing out that the elections were conducted using traditional paper ballots—a key demand long championed by the opposition—PM Modi highlighted the party’s failure to secure a single seat. Posting on social media platform X, the Prime Minister wrote:”MLC elections in 28 seats across 4 big states – Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Karnataka. Elections held using ballot papers. Guess how many seats Congress won? “The Congress failed to open its account in the by-elections held for 28 Legislative Council seats across four states. The party contested 12 of these seats, four of which it had won previously. The biggest setback for the Congress came in Karnataka, where, despite being in power, it failed to secure a single seat. The BJP-JD(S) alliance swept all four contested seats in the state, while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) maintained complete dominance across Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Bihar. The timing of the remark directly targets the Congress party’s ongoing national campaign against Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and its demands for paper ballot voting. BJP leaders quickly amplified the Prime Minister’s post, asserting that drawing a blank under paper ballot elections dismantles the opposition’s primary narrative surrounding electoral integrity
