Meta-owned WhatsApp has announced a major leadership change, appointing CRED founder Kunal Shah as its new global chief. Shah will succeed Will Cathcart, who has led the messaging platform since 2019 and is set to move into a new role within Meta.
The appointment marks a significant moment for India’s startup ecosystem, with Shah becoming one of the few Indian entrepreneurs to take charge of a global technology platform used by billions of people worldwide. Known for founding fintech company CRED and co-founding digital payments platform FreeCharge, Shah has built a reputation as one of India’s most influential startup leaders and angel investors.
According to reports, the leadership transition comes alongside a major strategic partnership between Meta and CRED. Meta is expected to invest around $900 million in the fintech company, further strengthening its presence in India’s rapidly growing digital economy.
Meta executives said Shah’s entrepreneurial experience, product vision and understanding of consumer behaviour made him a strong choice to lead WhatsApp into its next phase of growth. Industry observers believe his appointment reflects Meta’s increasing focus on India as a key market for innovation, digital payments and messaging services.
Shah’s rise to the top of one of the world’s largest messaging platforms has drawn widespread attention. Having started his career with humble beginnings and later building successful technology ventures, his journey is being viewed as an example of how entrepreneurial talent can shape global technology leadership.
The announcement has sparked considerable discussion across social media and the technology sector. While many business leaders and startup founders have welcomed the move, others are closely watching how Shah’s leadership may influence WhatsApp’s future strategy, monetisation plans and integration with Meta’s broader ecosystem.
With billions of users across more than 180 countries, WhatsApp remains one of the most widely used messaging applications in the world. Shah’s appointment signals a new chapter for the platform as Meta seeks to expand its services, strengthen user engagement and explore new growth opportunities in global markets.
