The conflict in the Middle East reached a new peak of intensity on April 6, 2026, as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a massive wave of airstrikes across Lebanon. The operation, described by Israeli officials as a “broad-scale degradation” of Hezbollah’s capabilities, has left at least 15 people dead and more than 50 injured in a single 24-hour period, according to Lebanese health officials. The strikes centered on Beirut’s southern suburbs and residential neighborhoods, including Jnah and AinSaadeh, where the IDF claimed Hezbollah had embedded command centers and weapons caches. Thick plumes of smoke hung over the capital as residential buildings were reduced to rubble.

In a strategic move to sever supply lines, the Israeli military also targeted and forced the closure of the Masnaa Border Crossing, the primary artery between Lebanon and Syria. The IDF stated the strike was necessary to prevent the transfer of Iranian weaponry to Hezbollah militants.Amid the escalating violence, internal political rifts in Lebanon have widened. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam issued a scathing condemnation of Hezbollah, characterizing their decision to engage in cross-border rocket fire as “irresponsible” and unauthorized by the state.

”Lebanon cannot be a sacrificial lamb for regional agendas,” Salam stated, as his government moved to formally ban the group’s military operations—a symbolic but politically charged effort to distance the state from the militia’s actions.

Despite this, the Lebanese Armed Forces remain largely sidelined as Hezbollah continues its “support war” for Iran, which remains under heavy fire from joint U.S. and Israeli operations. The violence in Lebanon is now inextricably linked to the broader U.S.-Israel-Iran war. Tehran has reportedly conditioned any potential ceasefire on a total cessation of hostilities against Hezbollah, a demand that Washington and Jerusalem have so far rejected.

As of Monday evening, the IDF has signaled that the campaign will intensify, with military chief Lt. Gen. EyalZamir vowing to “continue striking until the threat to northern Israel is neutralized.” With diplomatic channels largely frozen, the region remains on a knife-edge.
