Speculation around the political entry of Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, intensified during the Bihar cabinet expansion on May 7, 2026. Multiple reports said Nishant Kumar was likely to be inducted as a minister in the new NDA government led by Samrat Choudhary.
According to reports, Nishant Kumar had initially stayed away from active politics for years despite being seen as Nitish Kumar’s political heir. However, after Nitish Kumar resigned as Bihar Chief Minister and moved to the Rajya Sabha earlier this year, Nishant formally joined the Janata Dal (United) in March 2026. Sources quoted in several media reports said senior JD(U) leaders persuaded Nishant Kumar to take a more active role in governance ahead of the cabinet reshuffle.
Reports also suggested that he recently completed a statewide “Sadbhav Yatra,” marking his first major public outreach programme in Bihar. The Bihar cabinet expansion became politically significant because it marked the first major reshuffle under Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary after the BJP emerged as the dominant force in the NDA government. Reports stated that the BJP received the highest number of ministerial berths, while JD(U) secured a substantial share. Several reports later confirmed that Nishant Kumar was among the leaders who took oath as minister during the expansion ceremony held at Gandhi Maidan in Patna. Senior NDA leaders, including Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, attended the event. Political observers view Nishant Kumar’s induction as a major shift for JD(U), especially because Nitish Kumar had long projected himself as opposed to dynastic politics. Analysts believe the move signals the party’s preparation for a post-Nitish leadership transition in Bihar politics.
