The former Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney is dead at the age of 84. Cheney, who had taken a strong influence on domestic and foreign policy of U.S. in presidency of George W. Bush, died on Monday night with complications related to pneumonia and heart and vascular diseases as confirmed by his family on Tuesday.
Dick Cheney was the vice president between 2001 and 2009 under president George W. Bush and is regarded as one of the most impactful and polarizing vice presidents in the history of the U.S.A. Before becoming a vice president, Cheney served in some of the most significant offices, such as the White House Chief of Staff in the administration of President Gerald Ford, the Secretary of Defense in the White House Administration of George H.W. Bush, and as a congressman in the state of Wyoming.
Cheney has been termed as one of the chief strategists and the force behind significant policies enacted by the Bush administration, in response to the attacks of September 11, and a principal supporter of the invasion of Iraq in 2003. He was admired at the same time as being respected due to his decades of being in the service, and scolded heavily for his acceptance of controversial counter-terrorist methods, including so-called enhanced methods of interrogation.
Both Republican and Democratic leaders have shown their condolences and paid tribute to the devotion that Cheney had towards serving the people. His patriotism and the devotion to national security made his decades of service praised by former President George W. Bush who called him a decent and honorable man. The family of Cheney remembered him as a man of great values, brave and a firm lover of his country.
Despite Cheney being a controversial figure who was both liked by classic conservatives and was attacked by progressives due to his war to the north politics, there is no doubt about his influence on American politics. He and his daughter, a former Representative, Liz Cheney, have become the leading opponents of Donald Trump in recent years, which highlights a serious divide within the Republican Party.
The former president of the United States was Cheney who fought against heart disease most part of his adulthood and even underwent heart transplant in 2012. He leaves behind him a wife of 61 years old Lynne Cheney and his two daughters, Liz and Mary.
In the honor of Cheney, the flags on the U.S. government buildings, such as the White House, were lowered to half-staff, which announced the death of one of the most important and controversial personalities in the history of modern America.
