Dalal Street took a measured pause on Tuesday as benchmark indices consolidated within a choppy 600-point corridor, closing virtually unchanged after Monday’s dramatic 1,100-point resurgence. While heavyweight Information Technology and private banking stocks exerted downward pressure following recent earnings misses, domestic midcaps, smallcaps, and defence counters rallied strongly to support the broader market.

The 30-share BSE Sensex settled at 73,598.67, edging lower by just 8.08 points or 0.011% at the close. Opening weaker at 73,484.38 against Monday’s close of 73,606.75, the index slid 427 points to an intraday trough of 73,179.41 during morning trade as IT heavyweights faced sustained selling. However, aggressive buying in broader equities lifted the gauge by 583 points to touch an intraday peak of 73,762.98 before settling on a flat note.

The NSE Nifty 50 finished at 22,749.75, down a marginal 3.45 points or 0.015%. The 50-share index opened at 22,708.80, fell to an early low of 22,636.85, and rebounded across the afternoon to record an intraday high of 22,829.75, traversing a tight 193-point daily range.

The intraday chart traced an unmistakable ‘W-shaped’ pattern, featuring a weak start, an initial recovery to 22,800 by late morning, a brief midday dip, and a sustained rebound heading into the close. In contrast to headline index stagnation, overall market breadth turned decisively positive: advancing stocks on the BSE stood at 2,945 against 1,140 declines, while the NSE printed an advance-decline ratio of 2,577 to 554, reflecting strong underlying retail and institutional appetite beyond mega-cap benchmarks.

Oil Swings Near $115 Amid Tehran Diplomatic Talks and Ongoing Red Sea Hostilities

International oil benchmarks remained volatile as diplomatic negotiations competed with escalating shipping risks in the Middle East:

  • Tehran Negotiations: Officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan convened in Tehran on Monday for high-stakes diplomatic consultations aimed at cooling regional tensions and preventing wider military confrontation, with mediation facilitated by Qatar and Pakistan.
  • Crude Price Volatility: Brent crude futures initially retreated by nearly $1 to $114.81 per barrel during morning trades on de-escalation hopes before clawing back to trade at $116.24 (up 0.4%), while WTI rebounded to $102.07. Elevated risk premia held firm following fresh Houthi projectile strikes targeting pipeline infrastructure and civil airports in Yanbu and Riyadh.
  • Global Macro Cues: Across global bourses, trading remained cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s two-day policy meeting starting Tuesday. Although interest rates are widely expected to remain steady, markets are closely watching FOMC guidance for signals on persistent inflation that could keep US Treasury yields anchored near 4.97% and preserve dollar strength.

Technical Setup: 22,400 Key Cushion, 22,860 Overhead Barrier

Technical analysts noted that the market’s internal breadth remains resilient despite large-cap hesitation near the 22,800 zone:

  • Nifty 50 Levels: Immediate structural support is established at 22,600–22,650, with critical positional support placed at 22,380–22,400. On the upside, the index faces strong overhead resistance at 22,830–22,860; a decisive daily close above this barrier is required to trigger a push toward 23,050.
  • BSE Sensex Levels: Key support lies at 72,500–73,180, while resistance is seen at 73,760 and the 74,000 threshold.

Market desks suggest that with over 100 quarterly earnings reports rolling out and the Federal Reserve rate verdict due mid-week, trading will remain stock-specific. Investors are advised to favor fundamentally sound capital goods, defence, pharmaceuticals, and automotive names on price dips while maintaining caution across IT until global energy prices soften.
