Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has assumed charge as the new Chief of the Naval Staff, becoming the 27th head of the Indian Navy.

He succeeded Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who retired after completing his tenure.Admiral Swaminathan, a highly experienced naval officer, was commissioned into the Indian Navy in July 1987 and has served in various key operational and leadership positions during his nearly four decades of service. Before taking over as Navy Chief, he served as the Vice Chief of Naval Staff and headed the Western Naval Command.A specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare, Admiral Swaminathan has commanded several major naval vessels, including the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya and the guided-missile destroyer INS Mysore.

He has played an important role in strengthening India’s maritime capabilities and operational preparedness. Upon assuming office, Admiral Swaminathan emphasized maintaining the highest levels of operational readiness and combat effectiveness. He highlighted the importance of jointness among the armed forces, self-reliance in defence production, and greater indigenisation of military equipment.The new Navy Chief has been honoured with several prestigious awards, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM), recognizing his distinguished service to the nation.His appointment comes at a crucial time as India continues to modernize its naval forces, expand indigenous defence manufacturing, and strengthen maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.
