India has appointed veteran diplomat Vikram Doraiswami as its next Ambassador to China, a key diplomatic appointment as New Delhi and Beijing continue efforts to stabilize and improve bilateral relations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that Doraiswami is expected to take up his new assignment shortly.A 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, Doraiswami is currently serving as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. He will replace Pradeep Kumar Rawat as India’s envoy in Beijing.Widely regarded as one of India’s most experienced diplomats, Doraiswami brings significant expertise in Asian affairs and has previously served in China during the early stages of his diplomatic career. He is also proficient in Mandarin, a skill expected to aid diplomatic engagement with Chinese officials on a range of political, economic, and strategic issues.During his distinguished diplomatic career, Doraiswami has held several important positions, including High Commissioner to Bangladesh and Ambassador to South Korea and Uzbekistan. He has also served in the Prime Minister’s Office and India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.His appointment comes at a crucial time when India and China are working to rebuild trust and improve ties after years of tensions following the military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. Both countries have continued diplomatic and military-level discussions aimed at maintaining peace along the border and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.The appointment of a seasoned diplomat with prior experience in China is being seen as a strategic move by New Delhi to strengthen diplomatic engagement with Beijing while carefully managing complex bilateral issues and advancing India’s interests in the region.
