In a major pre-election crackdown, security forces across West Bengal have arrested over 1,500 individuals ahead of the final phase of the Assembly elections, aiming to ensure a peaceful and fair voting process. The large-scale operation was carried out jointly by state police and central forces, reflecting heightened concerns over law and order in the concluding stage of polling.

According to official sources, a total of 1,543 people were detained during intensified combing operations, vehicle checks, and targeted raids conducted in several sensitive districts. Areas such as East Burdwan, North 24 Parganas, and South 24 Parganas reported a significant number of arrests, as they have historically witnessed electoral tensions and sporadic violence.

Among those detained was a councillor from the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), adding a political dimension to the developments. The arrest has triggered reactions from both the ruling party and opposition groups, with each side likely to interpret the move through its own political lens. While authorities maintain that the action was part of routine preventive measures, political observers note that such incidents often intensify the already charged electoral atmosphere.

To strengthen security, the Election Commission of India has overseen the deployment of central armed police forces along with state personnel across key constituencies. Quick Response Teams, increased patrolling, and surveillance in identified vulnerable zones have been put in place to prevent any untoward incidents. Law enforcement agencies have also seized illegal arms and ammunition during the crackdown, underlining concerns over possible disruptions.

The final phase of polling is considered crucial, often determining the overall outcome of the elections. With tensions running high and political stakes at their peak, authorities are focusing on maintaining strict vigilance. Officials have reiterated their commitment to ensuring free, fair, and peaceful elections.

As voters prepare to cast their ballots, the spotlight remains on whether these extensive security measures will succeed in delivering a smooth and violence-free conclusion to the electoral process.
