In a decisive move to shield citizens from the escalating menace of cyber-extortion, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially launchedAbhay,a state-of-the-art AI-powered chatbot designed to neutralize “digital arrest” scams.

The tool was unveiled by the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, during the 22nd DP Kohli Memorial Lecture in New Delhi on April 20, 2026.

This initiative marks a significant shift toward tech-driven policing, providing the public with a real-time verification shield against fraudsters who impersonate law enforcement officials to siphon off life savings.

The “Abhay” chatbot serves as a primary defense mechanism, allowing users to instantly verify the authenticity of suspicious notices, summons, or warrants received via WhatsApp, email, or social media.

By cross-referencing documents against the CBI’s official records, the AI helps potential victims identify forgeries—which often feature sophisticated but fake government seals and intimidating legal jargon—before any financial loss occurs. Beyond verification, the platform educates users on the “red flags” of digital arrests, such as scammers demanding that victims remain on prolonged video calls or asking for transfers to “government-safe” accounts.

During the launch, CJI Surya Kant emphasized that cybercrime is a “borderless and faceless threat” that often outpaces traditional enforcement. He noted that tools like Abhay are essential to bridge the gap between real-time digital offenses and institutional responses. By providing an immediate point of contact, the CBI aims to strip away the psychological leverage that scammers hold over their victims.

Officials believe that the instant clarity provided by the chatbot will prevent the panic-induced compliance that these syndicates rely on.This launch is part of a broader 2026 national strategy to combat “digital dacoity.” Alongside the deployment of Abhay, the CBI has been designated as the lead agency for a unified pan-India probe into these organized syndicates.

As the digital landscape becomes increasingly complex, Abhay stands as a critical democratic tool, empowering the average citizen to turn the tide against cyber-fraudsters with a single click.
