A team of Assam Police conducted a high-stakes search at the New Delhi residence of senior Congress leader Pawan Khera on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
The raid, carried out in the Nizamuddin area with the assistance of Delhi Police, follows an FIR filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
While Khera was not present at his home during the search, police officials confirmed that they seized several electronic devices and recovered what they described as “incriminating material” related to their ongoing investigation into charges of forgery, defamation, and criminal conspiracy.
The controversy erupted after Khera held a press conference on April 5, where he alleged that the Chief Minister’s wife held passports from three different countries—including Egypt and Antigua—and possessed undeclared luxury properties in Dubai.
Chief Minister Sarma has vehemently denied these claims, asserting that the Congress party is using “false information” sourced from a Pakistani social media group to influence the upcoming state elections. Sarma launched a sharp verbal attack following the raid, stating that Khera had “run away” to Hyderabad to avoid arrest and vowing that the Assam Police would find him “even from the netherworld.
“The Congress party has hit back, labeling the police action a “witch hunt” and a blatant misuse of state machinery to silence the Opposition. Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh remarked that the deployment of a “full army of police” over basic public interest questions proves the ruling government is “rattled” ahead of the polls.
As of April 8, Khera’s whereabouts remain a point of political friction, with the Assam Crime Branch continuing its efforts to trace him. The case has added significant tension to the final days of campaigning for the Assam Assembly elections, scheduled to begin on April 9.
