Ahead of the monsoon session in the Lok Sabha on 21 July, INDIA allies are scheduled to hold an online meeting tomorrow. One may read between the lines that Trinamool Congress and Aam Aadmi Party are giving it a miss.
AAP has said it is no longer part of the Opposition grand alliance. The TMC, on the other hand, has cited arrangements for an annual official rally on 21 July.
The TMC leaders have said that they are busy readying for a rally in remembrance of death of 13 of its activists on 21July in 1993. But the fact remains that these deceased were Congress activists, as TMC supremo would split the Grand Old Party five years later.
The “real reason’, it was learnt from party sources is that the TNC leadership is loath to share a podium ‘too often” with Congress and the Left. The ‘staying away” sends a message to the grassroot activists as Assembly elections are scheduled to be held next year in which the TMC pitted against against the Congress and the Left.
Senior leaders attending the meet scheduled tomorrow would have confused the party activists. As the Assembly elections are inching closer, it would have sent a wrong message to the party rank and file, sources stated.
The TMC support to INDIA remains firm on the national level. But with West Bengal as the party’s base, it has different priorities in a local level.
The meeting has discussion on the prevailing political event on its agenda. There were 21 parties in INDIA alliance including AAP and TMC when it was formed before the Lok Sabha polls last year.
Congress remains INDIA’s principal participant tomorrow. It will also be attended by Samajwadi Party, Shiv Sena(UBT), DMK, NCP(SP), RJD, JMM, IUML and the Left parties.
INDIA coalition has been on a high since Lok Sabha election results in June last year. But its morale dipped post several reverses for the Congress in successive Assembly elections.
..
The party’s credentials to lead the alliance has come into question. Post Haryana election results, the alliance ‘s future has been questioned.
However, silver. linings cannot be overlooked. Members of the alliance have joined forces on several issues in the Parliament catching the BJP-led NDA on the wrong foot on several occasions.
