The Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai inaugurated the one of a kind Constitution Preamble Park at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar School of Law, celebrating the nation’s solidarity under one constitution. The event was attended by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. A lifesized statue of Dr. B R Ambedkar, the prolific creator of the Indian Constitution, was unveiled to commemorate the occasion. The park is a sprawling two acre showcase of replicas of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament House, the Supreme Court, and the Ashoka Pillar.
CJI Gavai’s address stressed on Dr. Ambedkar’s vision of ‘one nation, one Constitution’. He asserted that Article 370 was a direct contradiction of his ideology. Article 370 granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. He remembered the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision in December 2023 to uphold the abrogation of Article 370 with fondness. CJI Gavai noted that the ruling was inspired by and in honour of Dr. Ambedkar’s dream of a unified constitutional framework.
The Chief Justice banked on India’s resilience in conflict situations and compared it to neighboring countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. He said that whenever our country faces challenges, she has remained united due to the strength of the Constitution. He praised Dr. Ambedkar’s foresight in embedding enforceable rights.
Union Minister Gadkari was all praises for Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions to equality and freedom. Chief Minister Fadnavis on the other hand upheld the Preamble’s values, suggesting that embracing them could resolve 90% of the nation’s challenges. The event was a celebration of Dr. Ambedkar’s enduring legacy. It will stand as a memorial to India and Indians’ journey to becoming one of the more enduring democracies of the world.
