A 23-year-old Indian-origin councillor, Tushar Kumar, has created history by becoming the youngest Indian-origin mayor in the United Kingdom. He was officially appointed as the Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood in Hertfordshire during the council’s annual “Mayor Making” ceremony.

Originally linked to Haryana, India, Kumar first entered British politics at the age of 20 when he became one of the youngest Indian-origin councillors in the country. Over the last three years, he gained recognition for his involvement in community initiatives and youth-focused public service programs. His rapid rise in local politics has been celebrated by members of the Indian diaspora across Britain.

Speaking after taking office, Kumar said he hoped his journey would inspire more young people to participate in democracy and community leadership. He stressed that age should never become a barrier to public service and positive social change. He also acknowledged the influence of his mother, councillor Parveen Rani, who previously served as Deputy Mayor and encouraged his interest in politics.

Kumar studied Political Science in London while balancing his responsibilities as a councillor. Local residents have praised him for being approachable, energetic, and deeply involved in grassroots issues affecting the community. His appointment is being viewed as a symbol of growing diversity and youth representation in British politics.

The achievement has attracted attention both in the UK and India, with many calling it an inspiring moment for young leaders from immigrant backgrounds. Political observers say his success reflects changing attitudes in British local governance, where younger voices are increasingly taking leadership roles.
