United States President Donald Trump has imposed 25 per cent tariff on India’s goods. The imposition will start from August 1

Trump cited India’s “high trade barriers” and purchase of arms from Russia in a message in his X-handle. India is a “friend”, the US President stated who has imposed some of the highest tariffs on United States and maintained “obnoxious” non-monetary trade barriers.

Continuing in the same vein, Trump stated ” Remember, while India is our friend, we have over the years done relatively  little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high among the highest in the World, and they have the most obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers of any Country.”

Citing Mosvow’s war on Ukraine, the US President also criticised India’s military and oil imports from Russia.Along with the tariff, Trump said that India would also face “penalty” for its relations with Russia  and massive trade deficit.

“Also they bought vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and Russia’s major buyer of ENERGY, along with China at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE-ALL THINGS NOT GOOD”.

Mr Trump, has earlier repeatedly labelled India as a “trade abuser”. He has cited high import duty on American products and lack of alignment on sanctions with Russia.

Earlier, when asked about the upcoming tariff on India, the US President said ” Yeah, I think so. India is my friend They ended the war with Pakistan at my request….The deal with India is not fibalised.Indua has been a good friend but India has charged basically more tariff than almost any other country.”

In April, the Trump administration rolled out its “Liberation Day” tariff plan with a 10 per cent baseline tariff on most imports. Reciprocal tariffs  were also announced fir countries with large trade surpluses, including India.

India responded with tariff reduction on selected US Imports. It also sought a bilateral trade agreement to avoid or scale back these levies.
