A TMC  MLA has been remanded to the custody of the enforcement directorate (ED) till 12th September. He was arrested earlier this week in connection with the  ongoing investigation on financial allegations.

The ED produced the legislator before a special court , arguing that more time was needed to question him and gather evidence. According to officials, the investigation contained  suspicious transactions and possible misuse of public funds . The agency said that custodial interrogation was essential to reveal  the full network behind the suspected scam.

The MLA’s legal team strongly opposed  ED’s request. They argued that the arrest was politically motivated and aimed at defaming the image of the ruling party in West Bengal. “He has always cooperated with the investigation. There is no reason to keep him in custody” said the defence lawyer. Despite these arguments , the court sided with  ED and gave them custody until 12th September.

The news has created a storm  in West Bengal’s political landscape. TMC leaders have criticised ED’s action, calling it an attempt by the central government to target opposition voices. They claim that the timing of the arrest is not a coincidence , amidst of important political activities in the state .

On the other hand , the  leaders from the opposition parties in West Bengal welcomed the court’s decision. They argued that corruption should be punished regardless of political affiliation. “The law must take its own course. If he is guilty, he must face the consequences,” said an opposition party member.

The situation has brought uncertainty for the people of the MLA’s constituency. Some supporters gathered outside his residence, expressing faith in his innocence. Some said that they were worried about how the case might affect local development projects .

The ED has assured the court that it will present detailed report  in the coming weeks . Until then , all eyes are on 12th September, when the MLA will be produced before the court again.
