Tension gripped parts of Malda district after a protest over alleged deletion of names from the voter list turned violent in the Kaliachak area, leading to a major law-and-order crisis and triggering a political as well as media controversy.According to official sources, the unrest began when a group of protesters gathered near a Block Development Office (BDO) demanding restoration of their names in the electoral rolls ahead of the ongoing election atmosphere.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday alleged large-scale irregularities in the electoral roll revision process, claiming that a significant number of voters had been struck off the list in parts of Malda district.
