With the deadline for uploading documents of Waqf establishments on the UMEED portal drawing to a close on Friday (November 5), Muslim organisations are on edge as they rely on a ‘Plan B’.
The Supreme Court on Monday (September 15, 2025) struck a balance by staying crucial portions of the Waqf (Amendment) Act of 2025 which it found “prima facie arbitrary” while refusing to freeze the law in its entirety.
The Supreme Court on Thursday (May 22, 2025) said a requirement to mandatorily register waqfs dated back to 1923, and did not start with the Waqf (Amendment) Act of 2025.
Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, heading a Bench comprising Justice A.G. Masih, asked why waqfs across the country, including waqfs by user, had not bothered to register themselves all these years.
