President Droupadi Murmu on Monday appointed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Jammu and Kashmir deputy chief minister Kavinder Gupta as the lieutenant governor of Ladakh, besides naming Prof Ashim Kumar Ghosh and Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju as the new Governors of Haryana and Goa, respectively.
The government of India has introduced new transformative domicile and reservation policies for the Union Territory of Ladakh in response to long standing demands for local job security and cultural preservation after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
A delegation of 10 MLAs from the NDA, comprising 8 from the BJP, 1 from the NPP, and 1 Independent, met Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on May 28 to stake their claim to form a new government in the state. Biren Singh following 20 months of ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki Zo communities.
Amid escalating friction between the executive and the judiciary, President Droupadi Murmu has invoked Article 143 of the Constitution to seek the Supreme Court’s opinion on 14 key legal questions concerning the roles and powers of the President and Governors.
