Leading in eight of 12 Zilla Parishad and 51 of 125 panchayat samiti polls, BJP continues to be the largest party in Maharashtra, showing clearly that the party is not just an urban phenomenon, but also as strong in rural Maharashtra. BJP has made inroads into western Maharashtra in regions like Satara and Solapur, and performed reasonably well in Kolhapur at the cost of weakened NCP and Congress.

In the high-profile surrenders that augur well for a less bloody future, some prominent Maoist cadres on Thursday surrendered to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Gadchiroli. The surrender, which officials described as a “major breakthrough,” is yet another blow for the dissolving Maoist movement in the state’s red corridor.

The Maharashtra government has taken an important step by announcing that marathas who can prove kunbi lineage will be given kunbi certificates , making them eligible for reservations under the other backward classes (OBC) .

Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, 67, a veteran BJP leader and lifelong RSS swayamsevak, is poised to become India’s Vice-President making him the third Tamil Nadu-born leader to occupy the nation’s second-highest constitutional office. He follows in the footsteps of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1952–57) and R Venkataraman (1984–87), both of whom later rose to the presidency. 

In Karnataka, Gandhi alleged that over one lakh votes were fraudulently cast in the Mahadevapura Assembly constituency out of a total of 6.5 lakh. “There was ‘vote chori’ of over one lakh votes,” he said, further alleging that the Congress research team had found large numbers of duplicate voters, invalid addresses, and bulk entries in that constituency.
