A close aide of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was shot dead in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district late on Wednesday night, triggering fresh political tensions in the state. The deceased, identified as Chandranath Rath, was reportedly attacked by motorcycle-borne assailants near Madhyamgram while travelling in an SUV. According to eyewitnesses, the attackers opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene. 

Police officials said Rath suffered multiple bullet injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The vehicle’s driver was also injured in the attack and is currently undergoing treatment. Investigators believe the killing may have been pre-planned, and a special police team has been formed to probe the incident. 

BJP leaders condemned the murder and accused the state government of failing to maintain law and order. Suvendu Adhikari described Rath as one of his “closest and most trusted associates” and demanded a fair and speedy investigation. He also alleged that the attack was politically motivated and linked it to rising post-election violer’n the state. 

The incident has intensified the political atmosphere in West Bengal, where clashes between rival political workers have frequently been reported after elections. Security has been increased in sensitive areas across Kolkata and neighbouring districts to prevent further unrest. Police are currently examining CCTV footage from the area and questioning several suspects in connection with the shooting. 

Chandranath Rath, aged 41, was a former Indian Air Force personnel who later joined active politics and worked closely with Suvendu Adhikari in organisational and campaign-related activities. BJP supporters gathered outside the hospital and demanded strict action against those responsible for the killing. 

Authorities have assured that the culprits will be identified and arrested soon as the investigation continues.
