Nishant Kumar, son of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, on Sunday (March 8, 2026), officially joined the ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U) at the party headquarters in Patna. JD(U) working president Sanjay Kumar Jha inducted Mr. Nishant Kumar into the party.

Senior party leaders, including Rajeev Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, State party president Umesh Singh Kushwaha, Bijendra Yadav, Zama Khan, and Vijay Kumar Choudhury, were present on the occasion.

Mr. Nitish Kumar, however, was conspicuously absent. He was reviewing work at the Bihar and Patna museums in the State capital at the time, sources said. Mr. Nishant Kumar met him after he joined the party.

“I will try to take forward what my papa (father Nitish Kumar) has done for the people of Bihar…will try to take it (developmental works) to the people of Bihar,” Mr. Nishant Kumar, 50, said at the event.

“We all are proud of my father,” he said.

“Today, I have come here to join the JD(U) and it was my father’s personal decision, which I have accepted…we will all work under the direction of my father,” he said, adding, “I will try to take the works done by my father for the development of Bihar forward.” A large number of JD(U) supporters and workers gathered outside the party headquarters at Bir Chand Patel Path here to welcome Mr. Nishant Kumar. “Nishant hain to nischint hain (when Nishant Kumar is around, we are reassured), Jai (hail) Nitish, Jai Nishant,” they chanted. Drums, fleets of vehicles, and elephants, camels, and horses added to the celebratory mood of the event.

“Now, we want to see him (Nishant Kumar) as Chief Minister of Bihar,” the gathering shouted, amidst jostling media persons.

Mr. Nishant Kumar was born on July 20, 1975, and, like his father, is an engineer by education. His schooling was in Patna, and he later completed his engineering degree from the Birla Institute of Technology Mesra, Ranchi.
