Nitish Kumar, the longest-serving Chief Minister of Bihar, is set to transition into national politics as he prepares to take his oath as a Rajya Sabha MP in New Delhi on April 10, 2026. This move follows his recent election to the Upper House and his subsequent resignation from the Bihar Legislative Council on March 30. The transition marks a significant shift in Bihar’s power structure, as Kumar is expected to resign from the Chief Minister’s post shortly after the ceremony, likely around April 12, to facilitate the formation of a new NDA government in the state.
Reports indicate that while a leader from the BJP is expected to take over the Chief Minister’s mantle, Nitish Kumar’s party, the JD(U), has proposed a strategic role for his son, Nishant Kumar.
JD(U) insiders suggest that Nishant Kumar is being positioned to become a Deputy Chief Minister, holding key portfolios to ensure the continuity of his father’s “seven resolves” and development model.
Nitish Kumar is expected to serve as a high-level mentor to the new government. Sources indicate he will spend significant time at his 7 Circular Road residence in Patna to oversee the implementation of flagship schemes he pioneered.
Nishant Kumar has recently become more visible in the political sphere, formally engaging with party legislators and grassroots workers as of early April 2026. This is seen as a move to bridge the gap between the JD(U)’s “old guard” and its future leadership.
In anticipation of his move to Parliament, the Bihar government has already upgraded Nitish Kumar’s security to Z-plus cover. This decision was formalized via a notification on March 30, citing his imminent resignation as Chief Minister and transition to the Rajya Sabha. An NDA legislative meeting is tentatively scheduled for April 13 in Patna to finalize the names for the new cabinet, including the next Chief Minister and the potential induction of Nishant Kumar into the executive.
