Abdul Wahid Shaikh, the sole acquitted person by special court, demanded a re-investigation for the 2015 Mumbai train bomb blast. This Tuesday, Abdul Wahid demanded the formation of SIT headed by High Court judge to re-investigated the case.
Nine years after the arrest by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Special Court in 2025 cleared all the charges against him related to the serial blast. Though The court had sentenced five of the 12 men to death and seven to life imprisonment and one of the death row convicts died in 2021. After the judgement passed by Bombay High Court acquitting all 12 accused, Shaikh demanded re-investigation after raising the concern that the prosecution had utterly failed to prove the case.
On Monday (July 21, 2025), the high court released all 12, noting the prosecution utterly failed to prove the case, and it was “hard to believe the accused committed the crime”. Shaikh also wrote a book, naming it as ‘Begunah Qaidi’, while being behind the bars. He was a teacher before and has been vocal about the torture inflicted by ATS to the 12 accused.
“The government should re-investigate the case by setting up a Special Investigation Team to be headed by a High Court judge to ensure that the real perpetrators behind the train bomb blasts are arrested,” Shaikh told. He also demanded 19 crore rupees and an apology from ATS as compensation to the 12 men who stayed behind the bars for 19 years despite being innocent.
Sheikh also demanded justice for the family of the victims of the Mumbai train bomb blast and expressed sympathy for them. This synchronised bomb blast ripped through the Mumbai local train at various locations on the western line on July 11, 2006, killing more than 180 persons and injuring several others.
