Fresh violence and a growing hostage crisis have once again pushed Manipur into turmoil, as shutdowns and economic blockades continue to disrupt normal life across the state. The latest unrest began after the killing of three church leaders in Kangpokpi district, triggering tensions between Kuki and Naga groups.
According to reports, more than 38 civilians from different communities were allegedly taken hostage during the recent clashes. Security forces have intensified combing operations in hill districts to rescue the remaining captives, while several hostages have already been released.
The crisis has also led to an indefinite economic blockade on major highways by Naga organisations demanding the safe return of hostages. Thousands of trucks carrying essential goods have reportedly remained stranded, affecting transportation and daily supplies in the violence-hit state. Church leaders and civil society groups are now attempting to broker peace between the communities.
Manipur has witnessed recurring ethnic violence since May 2023 between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. The conflict has claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands of residents from their homes over the past three years. Despite heavy deployment of security personnel, tensions continue to flare up in different parts of the state.
