Tourist visas have started to be issued by the Indian government after a gap of five years. This news was issued by the Indian Embassy in Beijing on Wednesday. The Chinese Ministry of Affairs called this a “positive” decision, calling it marks another step in normalising India-China ties ruptured by the military standoff at the Line of Actual Control and Galwan clashes in 2020.  

An official notice was posted online and on Chinese social media that the tourist visa can be applied online from Thursday, 24th July 2025, and obtained after an appointment at the Indian Embassy in Beijing and consulates in Shanghai and Guangzhou.  

The latest mega-dam construction on the Yarlung Sangpo or Brahmaputra River in Tibet, concerns raised by Delhi and Dhaka have been rejected by the Chinese Government and they have communicated with both the governments.  

The Chinese MFA spokesperson said Beijing had taken note of the “positive move”, when asked about the visa insurance on Wednesday. “Easing cross-border travel is widely beneficial. China will maintain communication and consultation with India to further facilitate travel between the two countries,” said spokesperson Guo Jiakun in Beijing. 

After pandemic, issues between India-China and violence between the two countries militants, all flights were cancelled between both the countries and all visa services were shut down. In 2022, China restored the visa application for students, business and tourism purposes and nearly 85,000 visas were issued between January and June 2025. Recently India also started issuing visas not for tourism but for business and education purposes.
