In a decisive crackdown on the unrest following the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, state police have arrested 433 individuals and registered 200 FIRs across various districts since results were announced on May 4. Acting Director General of Police (DGP) Siddh Nath Gupta confirmed on Wednesday, May 6, that these actions were taken to curb reports of intimidation, assault, and arson that erupted shortly after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was declared the winner. In addition to the specific arrests, over 1,100 people have been placed under preventive detention to restore law and order.
According to reports from [The Indian Express] the violence has claimed at least three lives, including a ‘close aide’ to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari who was fatally shot in Madhyamgram. Clashes between supporters of the BJP and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have led to widespread vandalism of party offices and residential properties in areas such as Sandeshkhali, Asansol, and Cooch Behar. In Sandeshkhali, a police officer and several Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel were injured after coming under bullet fire while attempting to prevent a communal clash.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has maintained a “zero tolerance” policy, directing the West Bengal Chief Secretary and the DGP to take immediate action against perpetrators. Currently, 500 companies of CAPFs remain deployed across the state to ensure stability, with an additional 200 companies guarding strongrooms.
While the BJP has accused the TMC of “targeted assassinations,” the TMC has alleged that its own offices were vandalized by “BJP-backed miscreants”. Despite the high tensions, DGP Gupta noted that no fresh incidents were reported as of Thursday morning, as joint control rooms between the police and central forces continue to monitor vulnerable pockets.
