“Hostage Drama in Malda: Viral Video of Lawyer Triggers Political Storm.”

Malda, West Bengal, April 1, 2026: Tension gripped parts of Malda district after a protest over alleged deletion of names from the voter list turned violent in the Kaliachak area, leading to a major law-and-order crisis and triggering a political as well as media controversy.According to official sources, the unrest began when a group of protesters gathered near a Block Development Office (BDO) demanding restoration of their names in the electoral rolls ahead of the ongoing election atmosphere.

The demonstration soon escalated, with agitators blocking roads, damaging property, and clashing with police personnel. In a serious turn of events, several judicial officials present at the BDO office were allegedly confined for hours by the agitating crowd, prompting urgent intervention by the administration. The situation was eventually brought under control after prolonged negotiations and deployment of additional police forces.

At the centre of the controversy is lawyer Mofakkerul Islam, a Calcutta High Court advocate and former political candidate, who has been accused by investigators of playing a key role in mobilising the protest. He was later detained near Bagdogra while reportedly attempting to leave the state.

However, Islam has denied all allegations, maintaining that he was present only in support of a democratic protest and had no involvement in any violence or unlawful confinement. The incident gained further traction after multiple videos surfaced on social media showing Islam addressing crowds and challenging administrative authorities.

While some media outlets aired these clips to suggest his direct involvement in instigating the unrest, counter-claims soon emerged online alleging that certain portions of the footage were selectively edited or taken out of context.

The controversy intensified with accusations targeting a national news channel, claiming “distortion” of the original video to frame a particular narrative. However, no official confirmation or verified evidence has yet substantiated these claims, and authorities have not commented on any media manipulation angle.

Meanwhile, central and state investigative agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA), have initiated a detailed probe into the sequence of events. Investigators are examining video evidence, eyewitness accounts, and communication records to determine whether the violence was pre-planned and to identify those responsible. The incident has also sparked a political slugfest in West Bengal, with rival parties trading accusations over alleged links and accountability.

As investigations continue, the Malda episode highlights growing concerns over election-related tensions, the rapid spread of unverified content on social media, and the challenge of distinguishing fact from narrative in a highly charged environment.
