General Dhiraj Seth has officially assumed charge as the 31st Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi, who retired after more than four decades of distinguished service in the Indian Army. The change of command marks a significant milestone, with General Seth becoming the first officer from the Armoured Corps to lead the Army since 1997.

Before taking over as Army Chief, General Seth served as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff and previously commanded several key formations, including the Southern Command and the South Western Command. Throughout his military career, he has been recognised for his operational expertise, strategic leadership, and contributions to the Army’s modernisation efforts.

During the ceremonial handover in New Delhi, outgoing Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi emphasised the importance of integrated, theatre-based warfare and expressed confidence that the Indian Army would continue strengthening joint operations under the new leadership.

Following the assumption of office, General Dhiraj Seth said his priority would be to ensure operational readiness, accelerate modernisation, and maintain the highest standards of professionalism while safeguarding the nation’s security. He also paid tribute to the soldiers of the Indian Army and highlighted the importance of innovation and preparedness in the face of evolving security challenges.

General Seth’s appointment comes at a time when the Indian Army is focusing on technological transformation, indigenous defence capabilities, and enhanced coordination with the Navy and Air Force under the government’s vision of integrated theatre commands. Defence experts believe his experience in commanding formations along sensitive borders and his emphasis on future warfare will help shape the Army’s next phase of transformation.
