In preparation for the upcoming 13th parliamentary elections scheduled for February next year, Bangladesh’s top elections body plans to announce its action plan this week. Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed from the Election Commission said on Monday that a draft of the election roadmap is ready and just needs final approval. This information comes from the state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
Ahmed mentioned that the action plan aims to ensure strong coordination between departments and tackle relevant operational issues to allow for a smooth electoral process. He is confident that the final plan will be published within the week.
Addressing concerns about security, Ahmed assured the public that there is no reason to worry about law and order. He pointed out that law enforcement agencies and administrative officials are actively working in their areas. Ahmed stressed that if all parties carry out their responsibilities, the election process will go smoothly.
He highlighted the need for early preparation and noted that finishing tasks ahead of time will lead to a more coordinated and efficient polling process. His comments come amid growing speculation about the elections. This speculation was heightened by leaders of the National Citizen Party, who claimed a February election is unlikely without major reforms and the completion of trials started by the interim government.
Earlier this month, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus of the interim government confirmed that general elections would be held in February. The Election Commission later announced that the polls would occur in the first week of the month, reinforcing the government’s commitment to this timeline despite political challenges.
